Darug nation - located on the map of Australia
|
The Darug people were spread out all over the Cumberland Plain. The area stretches from the inner west of Sydney, to Windsor in the north and Picton to the South. The majority of Western Sydney is home to the Darug people, however their culture and traditions represent Aboriginal people from many other tribes and clans around Australia.
As there are various sacred sites located in the Darug community people are able to continue to learn about the cultural heritage of the local Aboriginal people and further develop their understanding of Aboriginal people today. The sacred sites are mainly located in the suburbs of Blacktown, Blue Mountains and the Cumberland Plains however by having these sites, reserves, cultural centres and National Parks non-Indigenous people are able to try and understand and gain knowledge about Aboriginal history associated with their local area and are able to take part in any events including both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. |
AREA
There is some argument about the extent of the Darug nation and what is exactly classified as Darug land. The territory that was Darug Lore was situated in the Cumberland Plain in Western Sydney. The Aboriginal people identify themselves as Eora, which means"the people". The language of the people is also called Eora.
A strong centre of cultural attachment for the Darug people has been the "Blacks Town" in the Blacktown local government area which was known as the Blacktown Shire. However, in September 2012 the Blacktown City Council de-recognised the Darug tribe, which it had previously recognised as the former owners of the area
